If you have a car, the 0.25-mile Bear Paw Lake Trail, 18 miles south of town on Road 8508, leads to a good lake where you can catch trout or coho salmon. Kayakers and canoeists may want to paddle the 40 miles from Hoonah [1] to Tenakee Springs [2]. The route goes to the head of Port Frederick, where there is a 100-yard portage into Tenakee Inlet. Neka Estuary in Port Frederick is a good place to see bears. A Forest Service cabin is available at nearby Salt Lake Bay, but a considerable amount of logging has beaten you there.
Ask at the Forest Service Hoonah District Office (907/945-3631, www.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass [3]) for details on these and other possible kayak trips in the area, including to Neka Hot Spring, 16 miles west of Hoonah.
