Come wintertime, Eaglecrest Ski Area (907/790-2000, www.skijuneau.com [1], Thurs.–Mon. early Dec.–Mar., adults $38–43) on Douglas Island provides excellent skiing opportunities—when the weather cooperates. Thirty ski trails are available with a vertical drop of 1,400 feet. Call 907/586-5330 for current snow conditions. A bus provides weekend-only transport to Eaglecrest ($6 each way). Just downhill from the ski area are three miles of groomed cross-country trails (free).
The City Parks and Recreation Department (907/586-5226, www.juneau.lib.ak.us/parksrec [2]) leads guided cross-country ski tours in the winter if there’s enough snow. These take place every Wednesday (adults only) and Saturday.
February–April, Alaska Powder Descents (907/364-2333, www.alaskapowder.com [3]) guides spectacular heli-skiing and snowboarding trips into the Juneau Ice Field and Chilkat Mountains; the cost is around $800 for a full day’s skiing.
