A bit out of the way, Sandpiper Café (429 Willoughby Ave., 907/586-3150, daily 6 a.m.–2 p.m., $7–13) is the breakfast place in Juneau [1], with big portions of pancakes, omelets, French toast, eggs Benedict, bagel and lox, plus lunchtime soups, ostrich burgers, Reubens, and other favorites.

Pastries, fresh-baked breads, cookies, and free Wi-Fi add to the allure. The atmosphere is homespun and funky, and the side-street location keeps the crowds away.

Best doughnuts in town? Drop by Breeze Inn (2200 Trout St., 907/523-4300, www.breezein.com [5]) near the airport; it’s open 24 hours a day and is also popular for takeout sandwiches.
