You’ll find no-frills grocery shopping at the big Fred Meyer (907/789-6503), nine miles northwest of town along Glacier Highway [1]. Other grocers out in Mendenhall Valley are Safeway (3033 Vintage Blvd., 907/790-5500) and Super Bear Supermarket (Mendenhall Mall, 907/789-0173).
In town, head to friendly Alaskan & Proud Market (615 Willoughby Ave., 907/586-3101 or 800/478-2118, www.alaskaandproud.com [2])—better known as A&P, but not to be confused with the East Coast chain—for a complete selection of fresh produce and meats. Safeway, A&P, and Fred Meyer are all open 24 hours a day. You might also try the somewhat-downsized Costco (5225 Commercial Way, 907/780-6740) in Lemon Creek, though most visitors won’t find much need for cases of tuna fish or 50-pound bags of charcoal.
The local natural foods market downtown, Rainbow Foods (224 4th St., 907/586-6476, www.rainbow-foods.org [3], Sun. noon–6 p.m., Mon.–Fri. 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Sat. 10 a.m.–6 p.m.) has a healthy and tasty lunchtime buffet ($8 per pound) with salads, soups, veggie dishes, and pizza slices; it is great for a fast lunch without a lot of fat.
