The best campsite near Haines [1] is at Portage Cove State Wayside ($5), just 0.75 miles from town. Water and outhouses are available, but there is no overnight parking; the site is for hikers and cyclists only. The location is quiet and attractive, and eagles hang around.
If you have a vehicle, stay at one of the two other excellent state-run campgrounds, both with drinking water, toilets, and picnic shelters. Chilkat State Park ($10), seven miles southeast of Haines, has a fine hiking trail to Seduction Point [2]; and Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site ($10), five miles northwest of the ferry, has good fishing and a lovely view over this turquoise-blue lake. More camping is at Mosquito Lake State Park ($10), 27 miles north of Haines.
Located behind Hotel Halsingland, Port Chilkoot Camper Park (907/766-2000 or 800/542-6363, www.hotelhalsingland.com [3], May–Sept., tents $10, RVs $25) has attractively wooded campsites, showers, and a coin laundry.
Salmon Run Adventures RV Campground (907/766-3240, www.salmonrunadventures.com [4], RVs or tents $18, no hookups, June–mid-Oct.), seven miles out Lutak Road, also offers showers for $3.
Another option is Haines Hitch-Up RV Park (851 Main St., 907/766-2882, www.hitchuprv.com [5], RVs $39, no tents). RVers also park at the gravel lot on Main Street named Oceanside RV Park (907/766-2437, www.oceansiderv.com [6], RVs $32).
