Accommodations

Walk out from the airport terminal and you’re 100 feet from what locals call the “Airport Lodge”; the official name is Yakutat Lodge (907/784-3232 or 800/925-8828, www.yakutatlodge.com [1], Apr.–Oct.). All-inclusive fishing packages are the primary attraction, but nightly rates are available in rustic old lodge rooms and simple cabins with a shared bathhouse. Meals are available for guests and the public, and there’s Wi-Fi and sometimes a hot tub. (Note: the lodge photo on the main website page is only for high-end stays; most accommodations are much simpler.)

Leonard’s Landing Lodge (907/784-3245 or 877/925-3474, www.leonardslanding.com [2], $75–85 s, $120–140 d) has been rebuilt following a big fire, with a rambling collection of buildings near the boat harbor. Package rates with meals and a fishing guide are available, along with boat rentals.

Glacier Bear Lodge (907/784-3202, www.glacierbearlodge.com [3]) has a modern central lodge with a restaurant and lounge. Motel-style ($195 d) units are adjacent.

Another modern place, Monte Bay Lodge (425/432-0722 or 866/513-4744, www.montibaylodge.com [4], $100–125 pp) has a pleasant location with two upstairs suites, covered porches, and big windows fronting the bay.

The Mooring Lodge (907/784-3300 or 888/551-2836, www.mooringlodge.com [5], year-round, $250 d; add $75 per person for extra guests) rents out two-bedroom apartment units that can sleep six and have full kitchens, a sauna, and views across Monti Bay to the St. Elias Mountains.
