The first weekend of May brings the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival (www.homeralaska.org/shorebird.htm [1]) to Homer [2], with bird walks, bay tours, an arts fair, speakers, and other activities, all in celebration of the great northward migration of shorebirds.
Memorial Day weekend in late May brings K-Bay SeaFest (907/235-7740, www.kbayseafest.com [3]) with kayaking classes, bay excursions, Coast Guard demonstrations, and a fun wooden boat festival where kids build their own boats.
Public radio station KBBI’s Concerts on the Lawn (907/235-7721, www.kbbi.org [4]) is the biggest summer event, attracting musicians from around the state. It takes place the last weekend of July. This is one of Alaska’s best and most eclectic radio stations; find it at 890 AM.
