Open 24 hours, Safeway (on Homer Bypass, 907/235-2408) is the main grocery store in town, but locals shop at the warehouse-style Save-U-More (907/235-8661), also on Homer Bypass.
In addition to its reputation as a halibut fishing center, Homer [1] is famous for oysters, and you’ll find acclaimed Kachemak Bay [2] oysters in local restaurants and from the Kachemak Shellfish Growers Co-op building (907/235-1935, www.alaskaoyster.com [3], $13–15 per dozen) across from the Fishing Hole on the Spit [4].
Get frozen local seafood on the Spit at Coal Point Trading Company (907/235-3877, www.welovefish.com [5], daily 8 a.m.–8 p.m. summer, daily 9 a.m.–5 p.m. winter), or sidle up to the bar for seafood chowder, steamed crab, and K-Bay oysters on the half shell.
The Homer Farmers Market (www.homerfarmersmarket.org [6]) takes place along Ocean Drive on Saturdays 10 a.m.–2 p.m. and Wednesdays 4–6 p.m. mid-June–late September. Booths carry local produce, arts and crafts, food, and games for kids. It’s a great way to find a sampling of work by local artists.
