The 366-mile Richardson Highway provides a north–south connection between Fairbanks [1] and Valdez [2], passing through the towns of North Pole [3], Delta Junction, Glennallen [4], and Copper Center [5] along the way. The 115-mile stretch between Glennallen and Valdez cuts between the rugged Chugach Mountains to the west and the massive Wrangell Mountains to the east.
This route—the oldest road in Alaska [6]—was blazed during the stampede of 1898 and has since been used as a footpath, a telegraph right-of-way, a wagon trail, and an auto thoroughfare. The last 25 miles to Valdez is one of the most spectacular drives in Alaska.
