Trails connect Creamer’s Field [1] with nearby Wedgewood Resort, home to the 75-acre Wedgewood Wildlife Sanctuary, with accessible trails and a small lake. The Alaska Bird Observatory (414 Wedgewood Dr., 907/7159, www.alaskabird.org [2]) is the only organization of its kind in the state, conducting long-term research on Interior Alaska birds and working to protect their habitat.
Visitors can watch bird banding most mornings June–mid-July and mid-Aug.–Sept., but call ahead for specifics. Their website lists unusual bird sightings in the Fairbanks [3] area, or call the Arctic Audubon Birding Hotline (907/451-9213, www.arcticaudubon.org [4]).
Also located at Wedgewood Resort, Fountainhead Auto Museum (212 Wedgewood Dr., 907/450-2100, www.fountainheadhotels.com [5], Sun.–Thurs. 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Fri.–Sat. 11 a.m.–6 p.m. mid-May–mid-Sept., Sun. noon–6 p.m. in winter, $8 adults, $6 children, under age 6 free) encompasses over 60 rare and historic automobiles from 1898 to 1938. All of these still run, and you’ll see folks driving several of them around the resort most summer evenings.
