Looking for lunch in a hurry? You certainly won’t go wrong at Bun on the Run, a little trailer parked out in front of Beaver Sports (3480 College Rd.) near the university. Sandwiches are made to order; check the board for today’s specials ($9) and then wait at one of the cable-spool tables in the parking lot. The Bun is open for lunch Monday–Saturday May–September.
L’Assiette de Pomegranate (414 2nd Ave., 907/451-7505, Mon.–Fri. 10:30 a.m.–5 p.m., Sat.–Sun. 11 a.m.–2 p.m. summer, Mon.–Sat. winter, $8–12) is a downtown lunch spot with creative sandwiches, salads, and daily soups, as well as outstanding desserts.
Second Story Café (College Rd. at University Ave., 907/474-9574, www.gullivers-books.com [1], Sun. 11 a.m.–5 p.m., Mon.–Fri. 9 a.m.–7 p.m., Sat. 9 a.m.–6 p.m., $6–8) is upstairs inside Gulliver’s Books. The menu covers the latest trends in wraps, espresso, homemade soups, salads, and other light fare. There is free Internet access, and plenty of books to read.
Satisfy your sweet tooth at Hot Licks (3453 College Rd., 907/479-7813, www.hotlicks.net [2], $3–7). There’s often a line out front on a summer afternoon as folks wait for a scoop of the 20-plus flavors of homemade ice cream, including wild cranberry and Alaska blueberry. Also on the menu are banana splits, Hawaiian shaved ice, and blended coffee drinks.
Long a favorite of locals, Geraldo’s Restaurant (701 College Rd., 907/452-2299, Sun. 3–10 p.m., Mon.–Fri. 11:30 a.m.–11 p.m., Sat. noon–11 p.m., around $20) gets packed on weekends. Although best known for pizzas—including a garlic-packed version—the restaurant also serves everything from calamari and veal to cheesesteak sandwiches.
College Town Pizzeria (3549 College Rd., 907/457-2200, Mon.–Sat. 11:30 a.m.–9 p.m.) serves very good pizza by the slice or pie, eggplant parmesan calzones, and “heart attack in a tube” strombolis.
Tourists love Fudge Pot (515 1st Ave., 907/456-3834, www.thefudgepot.com [3], daily 9 a.m.–7 p.m. summer, Mon.–Sat. winter), downtown across from Golden Heart Park, where you’ll find 30 types of fudge, plus soups, sandwiches, and espresso.
