In a quiet residential area immediately east of downtown, Craigmyle B&B Inn (1037 Craigdarroch Rd., Rockland, 250/595-5411 or 888/595-5411, www.bandbvictoria.com [1], $65 s, $100–115 d) has been converted from part of the original Craigdarroch Estate (it stands directly in front of the famous castle). This rambling 1913 home is full of character, comfortable furnishings, and lots of original stained-glass windows. Rooms include singles, doubles, and family suites, some share bathrooms, while others have en suite bathrooms. An inviting living room with a TV, a bright sunny dining area, and friendly longtime owners make this a real home away from home.
Another excellent choice at the lower end of the price spectrum is Selkirk Guest House (934 Selkirk Ave., Esquimalt, 250/389-1213 or 800/974-6638, www.selkirkguesthouse.com [2], $100–135 s or d), on the Gorge Waterway three kilometers (1.9 miles) from the Inner Harbour [3]. While the house has been extensively renovated and offers comfortable accommodations, it’s the location that sets this place apart from similarly priced choices. The only thing separating the house from the water is the manicured garden, complete with a hot tub that sits under an old willow tree. Breakfast is an additional $8 per person, but wireless Internet is free.
