The entire history of the Northwest Territories [1] is cataloged at the modern Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre (4750 48th St., 867/873-7551, June–Aug. daily 10:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m., the rest of the year Mon.–Fri. 10:30 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sat.–Sun. noon–5 p.m., free), within walking distance of downtown and on the shore of Frame Lake.
The Feature II Gallery displays a collection of Dene, Métis, and Inuit artifacts, while the Land Speaks Gallery catalogs the arrival of European explorers, miners, and missionaries and their impact on the environment. Meanwhile, the Aviation Gallery presents a realistic display of a bush pilot and his plane, and features a wall of fame for the pilots who helped open up the north.
Also here is a live hookup to the traffic controllers at Yellowknife Airport. A library stocks 6,000 historical and fiction books on the north.
