The Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories building on the shore of Frame Lake is the heart of territorial politics. Opened in 1993, it was designed to blend in with the surrounding landscape and made use of Northern materials. Through the front doors of a massive glass-walled facade is the Great Hall, topped by skylights and lined with the artwork of Angus Cockney.
The building’s centerpiece is the circular Chamber, in which the members of the legislative assembly sit facing the Speaker. Behind the Speaker stretches a massive zinc-plated mural of a Northern landscape.
The Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories building is open Mon.–Fri. 7 a.m.–6 p.m., Sat.–Sun. 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Free one-hour tours (867/669-2300) are offered June to August Mon.–Fri. at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m., the rest of the year weekdays only at 10:30 a.m.
Outside you’ll find Capital Area Park and a Ceremonial Circle comprising flags that represent each of the territories’ 33 communities.
