The Dene word for “spirit,” Nahanni Country extends west from where the main highway north to Yellowknife [1] crosses the Mackenzie River to the utter wilderness of the Mackenzie Mountains. The two main towns of Fort Simpson [2] and Fort Liard [3] are jumping-off points for the real adventure—rafting down the South Nahanni River through Nahanni National Park [4].
