The Klondike Institute of Art and Culture operates the Odd Gallery (2nd Ave. and Princess St., 867/993-5005), which hosts exhibits of art by Yukoners. This association also organizes the mid-August Yukon Riverside Arts Festival beside the Yukon River as it flows past downtown.
Art’s Gallery (3rd Ave. and King St., 867/993-6967) sells excellent hand-blown art glass, scrimshaw, pottery, batiks, and baskets woven from birch, cedar, or spruce root.
The most interesting of touristy Dawson’s many gift shops is the Gold Claim (3rd Ave. and Princess St., 867/993-6387) operated by Stuart Schmidt, whose grandfather was one of the original Klondikers. Schmidt uses gold he’s mined himself to make hand-forged jewelry.
Fortymile Gold Placers (3rd Ave. and York St., 867/993-5690) is in the business of selling and buying claims, but also sells raw gold out of its offices.
