As you drive down William Floyd Parkway to and from Smith Point [1], you’ll pass by signs for the William Floyd Estate (245 Park Dr., 631/399-2030, 11 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Fri.–Sun. June–Oct., free admission), now part of the National Seashore. Floyd was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
After his death, his family’s estate grew to include over 600 acres of forests and meadows, along with a grand 25-room mansion and 12 outbuildings. The estate remained in the Floyd family’s hands until 1977, when Cornelia Floyd Nichols signed it over to the National Park Service one year before her death.
