Southwest of Minnewaska State Park [1], where Route 209 meets Route 52, is the village of Ellenville. Located at the western base of the Shawangunks [2], Ellenville has traditionally been known for its Jewish boardinghouses and megaresorts. Most of these are gone now, but still in town are many fine Colonial and Greek Revival buildings, and a few remaining kosher shops and restaurants.
Among them is Cohen’s Bakery (89 Center St., 845/647-7620), famed locally for its first-rate raisin-pumpernickel bread.
The Ellenville area also has a reputation for good hang-gliding. Mountain Wings Hang Gliding Center (150 Canal St., 845/647-3377, www.flightschool.net [3]) rents equipment and offers introductory one-day hang-gliding courses.
