For a terrific view of Lake George [1] and the southeastern Adirondacks [2], drive up the Prospect Mountain State Parkway (518/668-5198, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. daily June–Oct., $6 per vehicle), which intersects with Route 9 just south of the village. The 5.5-mile drive leading up the 2,030-foot mountain offers 100-mile views of five states. Park your car near the top and board one of the “viewmobiles” that travel to the very crest of the mountain.
An easy 1.6-mile hiking trail, marked with red blazes, also leads to the summit. To reach the trailhead from Lake George village, take Montcalm Street to Smith Street and turn south. The trail begins midway down the block, and follows the roadbed of an old cable railroad.
