Main Street heads north of the Olympic Arena past about 100 shops, some of them one-of-a-kind, others—The Gap, Geoffrey Beene—ubiquitous chains. With Pipe and Book (2495 Main St., 518/523-9096), a village institution, sells used books, rare books, pipes, and tobacco.
At the end of Main Street lies Saranac Avenue, home to two top North Country shops. The Adirondack North Country Craft Center in the Lake Placid Center for the Arts (2114 Saranac Ave., 518/523-2062) represents about 250 upstate artists and artisans working in both traditional and contemporary styles. The Adirondack Store (2024 Saranac Ave., 518/523-2646) sells everything from hand-knit sweaters to Winslow Homer prints.
A small public beach (Parkside Dr., off Main St., 518/523-2445, open from dawn till dusk) is situated south of the Olympic Center. Just beyond the northern end of Mirror Lake lies Lake Placid and the Lake Placid Marina (Mirror Lake Dr., 518/523-9704), where one-hour lake cruises depart May–October.
