Run primarily by enthusiastic senior-citizen volunteers, this indoor-outdoor museum (17 Aviation Dr., Elmira-Corning Airport [Exit 51 off Rte. 17], 617/739-8200, www.warplane.org [1], 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Sat., 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Sun., adults $7, seniors $5.50, children 6–17 $4, families $18) is dedicated to the restoration and maintenance of flying-condition WWII and Korean War aircraft.
The planes are spread out like hulking insects all around a small visitors center and hangar where someone is always busy repairing something. A highlight of the museum’s collection is the “Fuddy Duddy”—a B-17 Flying Fortress used during World War II.
One of the best times to visit the museum is during its Wings of Eagles Airshow, held the third weekend in August. Throughout the rest of the year, volunteers are always on hand to conduct personalized tours.
